I love the west fjords, as my regular readers might know. I go there as often as I can, but not nearly as often as I would like.
A have a lot of friends there. One of them, a singer, lives with her family in a village near Ísafjörður, the biggest town in the area.
This is she with her latest house guest:
A Baby Seal
Yes, it’s a baby seal. Her daughter heard of a starving tiny seal, dying on the beach, an hour before her confirmation (which is a huge deal here in Iceland). She told her father and brother to go and get it, and the family took it in.
The feed it a mixture of milk and lýsi (cold liver oil), and the seal soon got better.
The tiny seal likes to be cuddled and it gets along nicely with the families other animals. But when they tried to release it into the sea, it just cried, followed the boat and when they insisted, it found “new” humans. (The video is in Icelandic, but there are plenty of shots of the cute little seal)
So now the little seal is back with it’s “original” family. They are trying to wean it to the sea by swimming with it.
But it still seem very much a baby, and not ready to fend for it self.
Here is another video, in Icelandic, but that hardly matters, the girl and the seal will melt your heart.
