How to Upcycle a Man’s Shirt

A Bad Laundry Accident and What Happened Next.

This is what happened after a very bad laundry accident:

Untitled-4

It started with a leaky sink, one of my husbands best shirts, a very yellow bib and a laundry basket that really shouldn’t have been right under said sink.

The bib stained the shirt and the several increasingly desperate attempts to remove the many vivid stains resulted in the disaster illustrated above.

I didn’t want to throw the shirt out so I kept it for several years at the bottom of my fabric pile. There is some beauty in this ravaged material, in my opinion at least.

How to Upcycle a Man’s Shirt

Recently I found it again and decided to upcycle it and make a pretty shirt for me.  First I punched holes in the collar and the cuffs.:

Then I worked Buttonhole wheel stitch around the holes and scattered some Detached chain stitches and some French knots around them.

That was not quite enough decorations my opinion, so I did some sampler like stripes in the front, using several simple stitches:

Chain stitch and Open chain stitch, Back stitch, Chevron stitch, Stem stitch, Scroll stitch, Rope stitch, Feather stitch and Double feather stitch

To modify the masculine shape a bit, I’m putting in little pleats, one in each front panel and two in the back. They are closed with Cross stitch.

The shirt is not quite finished, but hopefully I will finish it tonight and show a modeled photo very soon..

  1. Kappmellaði held ég.
Já, ekki nóg með að hún skemmi flíkina með lit, heldur gerir hún á hana mörg göt og krotar svo á hana með saumnál! Frábært.
Þetta minnir mig á það þegar ungur sonur minn krotaði á vegg með tússi og ég rauk til og smurði tannkremi á allt saman. Ég gleymi ekki furðusvipnum á barninu þegar hann sá hegðun mömmu sinnar, hún hlaut að hafa bilast eitthvað.

  2. Lovely, I am in awe of your creative genius.

  3. Very nice, very beautiful. Cornelia
